The Fancy Women Bike Ride was born in Izmir in 2013. Its goal was to make women more visible in public spaces—especially on bicycles. It was not a protest, but a celebration: a celebration of freedom, accompanied by colors, flowers, and smiles.
In a short time, it transformed from a local event into a global movement. Spreading from neighborhoods to the hearts of major cities, the tour was held in over 30 countries and more than 250 cities in its tenth year. In every city, it was organized entirely by volunteer women, with no political or commercial agenda. This women-led movement became the clearest proof that change can begin with a bike ride.
The Fancy Women Bike Ride invited women from all walks of life to take part in the events, with a clear message: We are here, we ride bikes, and we inspire other women.
Celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2023, the women’s movement continues today through the individual efforts of volunteers, working to increase women’s visibility in traffic, promote active mobility, and build a strong community of women.
